The new wheel-based robot, called Stretch, is designed for straightforward warehouse work. Using a long automated arm and a “smart gripper” featuring embedded sensors, the machine is able to work quickly, handling around 800 boxes an hour.
“Stretch’s mobile base allows it to go to where repetitive box lifting is required — unloading trucks, building pallets of boxes, and order building,” Boston Dynamics said in notes accompanying a video posted on YouTube (top).
The company added that its new robot will make warehouse operations more efficient and safer for workers, suggesting it’s designed to work alongside humans rather than replace them.
