You know, survival games can be a lot of fun, but they tend to not let us leave the forbidding wasteland that we’ve found ourselves stuck on. But Nira, the debut game from one-man studio Baseline Games, has planes. And that means we can escape. Sort of.
Nira’s simple pixel style gives us Atari vibes, but from the looks of it, it’s deceptively deep when it comes to survival mechanics. Crafting, combat, vehicle-building, dungeon-diving, and experience points that let you level up to unlock new recipes are all part of the game, and since the islands that you explore are procedurally generated (like Minecraft) then you can theoretically play the game forever without seeing the same island twice.
The game can also be played with up to three friends in local co-op mode, if you need help beating the Golem or figuring out the recipe for “Plane”.
Nira will be coming to Switch “this Spring”, but no further details on the exact date of the release are available yet. It’s in Early Access on Steam, and has been for around a year – so, hopefully, it’ll come to console with plenty of polish and player input.
What do you think about Nira’s chunky pixel style? Have you always wished that Minecraft had planes? Give us your opinions below!
