Epic Games and The Walt Disney Company announced a new partnership that will result in a joint creation of a brand-new entertainment and games universe. The Walt Disney Company will invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games to secure an equity stake.
The multi-year project will create a new universe that includes all Disney properties including Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar. Disney says that Unreal Engine will allow players to create and share their own stories and experiences. They can also express their fandom through experiences powered by Unreal Engine.
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in a recent press release that the exciting partnership with Epic Games would bring together Disney brands and franchises, as well as the massively popular Fortnite, in a new gaming and entertainment universe. “This marks Disney’s biggest entry into the gaming world and offers significant opportunities for expansion and growth.” We can’t help but be excited for fans to discover the Disney stories and worlds in new and exciting ways.

The news comes after four and a quarter months. Epic Games laid off over 800 employeesAbout two months after Epic Games Launched Lego Fortnite Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival. Disney properties have been featured in Fortnite for many years. One of the first collaborations was with AvengersInfinity WarThanos is featured in the Battle Royale title. Since then, characters from Marvel, Star Wars and Disney have appeared on the popular title. Epic’s Unreal Engine is used in games such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Kingdom Hearts 3, park technology at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge like Millennium Falcon: The Smugglers’ Run, and various Star Wars and Marvel films and TV projects.
Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, said in a press release that Disney was among the first companies who believed in the potential to bring their worlds together with Fortnite. They use Unreal Engine in their entire portfolio. “Now, we’re working together on something completely new to create a persistent, interoperable, and open ecosystem that will bring the Disney and Fortnite community together.”
Epic Games is also the owner of several other development studios such as Rocket League developer Psyonix; Fall Guys developer Mediatonic; and Rock Band studio Harmonix. Sweeney currently owns the majority stake in Epic Games. Tencent, Sony, Kirkbi A/S, and Danish investment company Kirkbi A/S also have stakes. Disney’s press release notes that the $1.5 Billion investment to acquire an equity interest in Epic Games will be subject to regulatory approvals.
