Arguably the best time of the year to purchase new video games, consoles, accessories, and software is during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and one of the most popular systems right now — not to mention one that has been out of stock frequently throughout 2020 — is the iconic Nintendo Switch. With the holiday shopping season now upon us, we’ve compiled a handy guide detailing the Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals that we expect to see this year, some tips for how to shop the big Black Friday weekend and Cyber Week sales, and some early bargains you can score right now.
There are already quite a few gaming deals going on as the holidays approach, and they aren’t just on the Switch. We’ve also put together similar guides for the best Black Friday Xbox One deals and Black Friday PS4 deals if you’re looking for more than just Nintendo savings in 2020.
What Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals to expect
Nintendo is notoriously stingy when it comes to discounting its products, even during Black Friday, but we have seen some worthy deals on a variety of hardware and software during previous sales. In the case of the Nintendo Switch, the company tends not to offer direct savings on the console itself, but instead rolls out Switch systems bundled with free games and accessories that are a great way to save. For example, we’ve seen multiple retailers sell the console with a free memory card, which you will absolutely need in order to download extra game considering that the Switch only has 32GB of built-in storage.
For games and accessories, you’ll want to keep a close eye on Amazon, Walmart, GameStop, Target, and Best Buy. Switch games don’t go on sale too frequently outside of these big holiday events, so keep your radar tuned for discounts on newer titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons as well as top-rated classics like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Additionally, during this time of the year you will see an influx of Nintendo Switch accessories, specifically cases and microSD cards for storing your favorite games, slashed down to extremely affordable prices. If you are looking to get a carrying case to take your Switch with you on the go, some new accessories (including the always-necessary spare controller), or add-ons such as Amiibos or Nintendo Labo kits, now’s the time to stock up.
What Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals we saw last year
In order to get a great deal on a console, you have to keep an eye out for Nintendo Switch bundle deals. During Black Friday 2019, Nintendo offered a bundle that included the standard system along with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and the Starlink: Battle for Atlas Starter Pack with Star Fox for $300 at Best Buy. Target had a pretty solid Black Friday Nintendo Switch deal on a console bundled with a 128GB microSD card, also for $300.
There was one standalone discount available for the Nintendo Switch Lite, and we might see something like that again if you are interested in the handheld-only variant of Nintendo’s eighth-generation console. Accessories were marked down as well, including some carrying cases, docking stations, and the GameCube-style controllers that are always popular with the Smash Bros. crowd. The biggest discounts were on SanDisk microSD cards, which, while not specifically Nintendo Switch accessories, saw deep price cuts of more than 50%.
Just a handful of the many Switch games offered on sale during Black Friday 2019 included Super Mario Odyssey, which dropped down to $40 ($20 off), as well as other popular titles like Overwatch Legendary Edition and Team Sonic Racing which hit lows of $20-$25. More recent releases like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Super Mario Maker 2 also saw some nice discounts, so don’t think that only older games will be marked down among the Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals.
Should you buy a Nintendo Switch on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?
As a general rule for all sales, we don’t recommend sleeping on a deal that you like, thinking that it will be on sale again for cheaper later. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday in particular, it’s actually a good idea to treat these as one extended sale: Black Friday now starts Thursday evening and continues for the entire weekend until Cyber Monday starts, while many retailers run a longer “Cyber Week” event that keeps the deals rolling out for even longer.
Stock is also usually limited during these sales, and this is doubly true for the Nintendo Switch console which is notorious for selling out quickly — especially when it’s discounted. Even with games and accessories, though, you shouldn’t drag your feet if you see an early bargain you like. We expect the best Black Friday Nintendo Switch deals to move quickly this holiday sale season given how scarce stock has been throughout this year.
