Described as a “social indie adventure game”, Sky: Children Of The Light launched on iOS in 2019 and on Android the following year. It was first confirmed that a Switch version was coming during the Indie World Showcase in March last year.
Thematically similar to Journey, the game sees players exploring a magical kingdom using a cape which allows them to fly. Also like Journey, players can meet in-game, making for a unique social experience.
Since the game arrived on smartphones, it has been downloaded over 50 million times, and thatgamecompany has used its popularity to aid good causes. A “Days of Nature” event was held to mark Earth Day 2020, during players could make an in-app purchase which would result in the planting of a tree – a total of 40,576 trees were planted across the Amazonian and Australian forests as a result.
In the same year, the “Days of Healing” event was held in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. During this, another IAP was made available which donated 100% of its proceeds to Médecins Sans Frontières – $1,027,340 was eventually raised.
